25. The Bangkok adventure was starting at full speed.
We were already in front of the hotel reception when a tiny Thai woman with a kind, but slightly
questioning look said "I can't find your reservation. Are you sure you are at the right hotel?" My wife gave
me a slightly disapproving look and I read more questions in her gaze than the floor had the building we
were to stay in. Yes, but I had done my homework. I pulled out a piece of paper with a confirmation from
Bookings.com that confirmed the "error" was correct. We received dozens of apologies in a mixture of all
sorts of words and languages and to start our stay excitingly from the first hours to our pleasant surprise,
the same girl, with a much more optimistic and cheerful look shared "The mistake is ours. As a
compensation we give you an apartment on the last possible floor for accommodation, namely the 74th
floor!"...WOW... "Unbelievable luck", we said to ourselves, and I read in my wife's eyes both elation and
a slight emotion of respect for the floor on which we would be staying. Moreover, the general mood was
hyper positive. After a few elevator changes, according to the hotel's check-in areas, the apartment door
opened and we rushed to the windows, dropping our suitcases near that same front door. "Wow, is there
a balcony?", I asked immediately, and we burst out laughing because it's probably logical that there isn't,
but we'll check. The view was mind-blowingly beautiful. All of Bangkok at our feet, like we were birds. The
vehicles looked super tiny to us. We started imagining what all this wonder would look like when night
fell, and we saw the bright night lights of the city of angels. We very quickly packed our bags and headed
up to the 84th floor to see what was going on up there, a mere 10 floors above us. The staff told us that
attractions, breakfast restaurants followed and ours was on the 81st floor, the 84th floor had a 360
spinning wheel from which we could view and photograph Bangkok both during the day and evening.
There was also a bar on the top floor, which we made no secret of our respect for soon after. We explored
these wonders and returned for a refreshing shower and a quick change. I confess that I hardly sleep on
a plane myself, but this time I didn't repeat the mistake of taking a few hours’ sleep after arrival, and we
dove straight into the hectic life of this enigmatic city. I remember at first, we wandered around aimlessly
to get a feel for what was happening in the hotel area. An hour later we picked up our air train passes and
headed to have lunch at one of the malls, in this case Bangkok Mall. I had already experienced the
deliciousness that Thailand has to offer, and we quickly found our spot to arrange our entree of soup,
mainly rice and fish, the obligatory Singha or Chang beer and lots of fruit. It was interesting that the air
conditioning in the mall was pretty serious, it was downright chilly compared to the heat outside.
Moreover, that was our problem. Fed again, we wandered around with no clear path or direction to soak
in the life of the locals. On the way back to the hotel we passed to buy fruit, all sorts of nuts and... beer,
lots of beer. We were getting ready to welcome the evening at the window of our hotel suite. It was
candlelight fairly quickly, as if to please us and not make it drag on too long. I moved a small round table
just below the window, as well as two large armchairs, we cracked open a beer and nuts and shivered in
anticipation for the unique view that emerged. The moment came, the feeling was unique. And now I
close my eyes and relive it over and over again, that very first moment. A true light show, a palette of
buildings in different size, style and architecture. Yes, in Bangkok you can see within 100 meters an
exquisite temple, an old, dilapidated building, a cosmopolitan hotel, a hospital, a small market and park,
a historical monument. Colors are colorful, life is colorful. That's why this city has been the most visited in
the world for the past few years. After this charming view, in sweet talk and a few kegs of beer, we couldn't
help but head to the bedroom which turned out to be so comfortable and whether it was the high floor
or the overall atmosphere, but we slept like slaughtered. And not just the first night, when presumably
the tiredness was plenty, but every single one. Wide suites, good comfort. Well, a bit shabby and in dire
need of renovation, but who could complain about what had happened by then..
