32. The magic key that marked all our trip started at Chatuchak Park.

We spent a couple of hours at the market browsing, snapping photos, munching on juices and various goodies, and it was time for the glued-to-the-market Chatucak Park. After a brief rest on the first available bench that appeared, we drifted in to see how it was organized and if it was any inferior to the other major park, namely Lumpini. We were amazed at the orderliness and cleanliness of Chatucak, something we hadn't expected, especially in light of the many things to eat for sale in the market itself. Beautiful palm trees and colourful vegetation alternated, with benches arranged around them. Anyone who wished could take a ride on a boat or pedalo in the tranquil lake if they wished. We took a long walk, lots of videos and photos, and it was time to wrap up our activities in the area when what would be the denouement of our entire adventure in Thailand, and why not the entire book, happened. What was it that happened to make us give it so much importance? Now you will find out. Being in the palm tree area of the park, we wondered why there was no one lying under them, given that elderly Thai women were selling straw mats. So we decided to set the tone and see how the people around us would react to this wish of ours. We got to the first Thai grandmother and after a brief haggling session, without which there is no bargaining in Thailand, we bought a mat measuring about two by two meters. So far so good...But, at one wonderful moment, this same grandmother seller looked at me with a strange look, and in her strong yellow eyes I could see some anxiety and a strong desire to share something important. My curiosity grew because she really wished to address me with a remark. And...at that moment, continuing to look at me fearfully and insistently, she predicted that "You're not coming home anymore!"...How would you react then? Probably like most of you, I reacted similarly and decided to ignore her. My wife looked at me quizzically, searching for something to say. So I was obliged to react, at least to her, and then I mentioned "She probably meant that I should stay living in Thailand and marry a Thai woman!?" and then I smiled and we moved on without further mention of this grandmother. But the truth is that what you are about to read next in my book will make you shudder repeatedly, sweat your hands, and relive the moment as if you were there with us. So let's move on and see what had happened...After our walk in the park and that huge market, we returned to the Victory Monument area to take pictures and look around the area. The monument was erected to commemorate Thailand's victory in the Franco-Thai War in 1941. It's a place that brings pride to the locals and has its own energy and is not to be missed if you are a tourist in Bangkok. We noted our presence there as well and went back to the hotel for a short rest and a change of clothes. Dinner at Bangkok Mall was in the offing, after which we planned to visit our local rooftop bar on Bayoke Sky, where posters were posted for an anticipated party. An hour later we were ready to go out again. As I've already told you, we don't like to hang out, but to make quality use of the time we have at any destination, soaking up the local culture, traditions and even some habits. Strangely, as we approached the mall, something in us flipped and we felt like eating European food. To that end, we took a walk to Terminal 21, another large mall, and found a great Italian restaurant in the area and against all odds, had a large hot pizza. What the heck..we are human too. We were getting a little heavy because what would a pizza be if it didn't end with something sweet, especially Italian? We further aggravated our stomach condition with mascarpone cream. The feeling after a meal like that isn't much like going to a bar, but we were already set to see what kind of party there would be, plus it was only 10 floors above our tamo home. Great, we could have walked home. It was 11pm and we were having cocktails at the bar. The air conditioning was so strong that we had to wear long clothes, and the dress code of the event suggested it. It honestly wasn't what we expected, but the feeling of drinking something with such a view predetermined our good mood. After 2 hours, we were already at our beds, but we also took our time at night Bangkok, sitting on the armchairs in front of the window on the 74th floor. A wonderful day, we were very happy.
